The problem was that my installation folder name had a space in it – the installation will only work if the installation folder name is a continuous set of characters without spaces. The second problem was that I forgot to run the installation as a windows 10 administrator, it wouldn’t install just on my normal account. Setup will extract all the files in mdactyp.exe to the user's TEMP directory. From there, it will run the Setup program dasetup.exe. The Setup program will display the license agreement, which the user must accept to continue. Then the user will have two options: either select a complete installation of MDAC or exit the Setup program.

If your DBMS is Microsoft SQL Server, and the version is prior to MS SQL 2005, this section may be applicable to you.
Earlier versions of SQL Server did not use connectivity software. Instead, it was necessary to configure an ODBC data source. The ODBC driver had to be installed on the machine on which you install the Oracle BI Server. Before you install Oracle BI Server components, you must have Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) installed on the Oracle BI Server machine where it connects to SQL Server database.

MDAC is considered a Windows system component and is included with many applications, so MDAC may already be installed. If you are installing the Oracle Business Intelligence Cluster Server feature, MDAC is not required on machines that host only Cluster Controllers.

Checking for an Existing Installation of MDAC
Operating System: Windows only.
Use the following procedure to determine if the appropriate version of MDAC is already installed. If it is not installed, complete the MDAC installation before beginning the Oracle BI software installation. For the appropriate version to use, see System Requirements and Supported Platforms for Oracle Business Intelligence on Oracle Technology Network.
NOTE: Oracle BI Server components are described in the topic Oracle BI Component Installation Options.
To check for an existing installation of Microsoft Data Access Components
- Search for the files msdadc.dll and oledb32.dll (optional).
These files are generally located in the C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemOLE DB folder.

Installing MDAC

If MDAC is not installed, install it using the following procedure.
To install Microsoft Data Access Components
- Point your browser to the Microsoft Web site.
In the Search box, type the words MDAC download and press Enter.
- Navigate to and select the MDAC type that conforms with the type specified in System Requirements and Supported Platforms.

- After the program has downloaded, locate the file mdac_typ.exe and click it.
This starts the MDAC installer.
- Follow the prompts to complete the MDAC installation.
• 64 bit MDAC debuted with MDAC 2.7

• 64 bit MDAC 2.7 is only available with Windows XP Client 64 bit (limited release)
• Windows .NET Server 64 bit will ship with 64 bit build of MDAC 2.7 sp1

• There are NO TOOLS available to check the MDAC on 64 bit OS.
• If we suspect MDAC is corrupt, the only option left is to reinstall the LATEST SERVICE PACK for that OS.

• 32 bit MDAC components still exist on a machine in the SYSWOW
• There is no “thunking” between 64 bit and 32 bit. (COM+ apps excepted) To use 32 bit MDAC you must compile a 32 bit application
